CONFERENCES
Health and Human Rights Conference - HHRights (2 Co-Chair Positions)
The annual Health and Human Rights Conference is UTIHP's largest event. For 2 days in March, hundreds of students gather to discuss, dissect, and disseminate a topic that is relevant and urgent to contemporary international affairs. Please visit http://www.hhrights.ca/ for more information about this conference.
LOCAL FOCUS
High School Partnership Program - HSPP (1-2 Coordinator Positions)
The HSPP seeks to engage high school students and empower them to pursue their interest in international health. There has traditionally been an annual HSPP Conference, but the program is now looking towards hosting monthly or bi-monthly high school outreach events in its place. Organizers will be responsible for setting up case studies, interactive workshops, and/or presentations by members of the professional community to connect and motivate high school students.
Indigenous Peoples Health Initiative (IPHI) and Refugee Health Outreach (1-2 Coordinator positions)
*(IPHI and Refugee Health Outreach were previously separate committees but will be merged in 2010-2011).
IPHI aims to promote awareness of Indigenous peoples issues within Canada and abroad, exploring commonalities where they exist. This year the program may expand to include a wider scope, such as urban health and homelessness. Community service is a component we want to emphasize this year. The Refugee Health Outreach program has students meet at Sojourn House (http://www.sojournhouse.org/index.htm) every 3-4 weeks in the fall and spring to assist refugees adjust to Toronto life, through lectures and activities on nutrition, the health care system, and so on.
GLOBAL FOCUS
HIV/AIDS Committee (1-2 Coordinator positions)
Organize events throughout the year, especially around World AIDS Day, relating to the impact of HIV/AIDS. This committee may be expanding to include sexual health/infectious disease with regularly planned thematic events.
Global Health (GH) Education (1-2 Coordinator positions)
This committee will be undergoing major changes for 2010-2011 and requires a creative and highly self-motivated coordinator to ensure its success. GH Education was created to promote international health among the different faculties at U of T, but is now aiming to reach out to students in a more contemporary light. Ideas include a media component (e.g. video series/newsletter/online) and having semesterly themes based on the most current topics in global health.
UTSU Scholarship (1 position)
The UTIHP Summer Scholarships are funded by the University of Toronto Student Union (UTSU) Student Levy and the Faculty of Arts and Science. Select students can receive funding to conduct research in an international setting. For 2010-2011 we would like to emphasize more global health research and research ethics awareness, and to do more on-campus programming throughout the year.
EXECS
Treasurer (1 position)
Basic responsibilities include recording UTIHP finances, writing cheques, and keeping track of receipts. If interested, candidate may also take on more advocacy-related duties, such as fundraising and assisting the different committees with their budgeting and financial planning.
Webmaster (1 position)
Setting up the website, addressing technical issues when they arise, assisting committee members with using the site. Experience in web programming is a strong asset. You will be working with our web designers to ensure the UTIHP website is functional, easy to use, and visually appealing.
*NEW* Ontario Model World Health Organization - OMWHO
The Ontario Model WHO (OMWHO) conference is a new undertaking by University of Toronto International Health Program (UTIHP) this year planned for November of 2010. Similar to Model United Nations conferences, OMWHO aims to simulate General Assembly committee sessions held by the WHO to address issues of global health. We hope to host delegates from across Ontario to join us for three days of speakers and debates. Delegates will play the roles of national representatives to the World Health General Assembly and various specialized agencies, exercising skills of diplomacy, negotiation, and networking, while gaining insight into local, international, political and social forces that inform international health issues.
OMWHO has recruited most of its executive, however, we are still looking for a motivated individual to fill the position of Undersecretary-General, Committee Affairs.
This individual is responsible for overall organization of committees at OMWHO. Responsibilities include: selecting committees and dais members, training committees’ staff, editing and/or composing background guides, and receiving position papers from delegates. Strong English communication skills and knowledge of international relations and the United Nations are required.
We are also looking for Contributors to the Background Guide, which are not executive positions. We are looking for knowledgeable individuals who wish to contribute to a document providing key background information regarding our selected topic. If you are interested in researching and writing on a topic related to international health, this would be a great opportunity to get involved.
If you are interested in either of the positions or have any questions, please send your CV and a brief statement outlining your interest (max. 250 words) to
